Scaling Geothermal in the UK and Ireland

If we want geothermal to scale, we should start with what we’re already good at, and focus on the lowest risk and most accessible resources.

In the UK and Ireland, the geothermal opportunity is not abstract. The resource is there, and the heat demand is huge.

What’s missing is consistent deployment.

So I keep coming back to a simple approach:

Build the market around our capability strengths, and match system types to the places they fit best.

That means being pragmatic about our approach and focus on:
>Where open loop aquifers, at most any depth, are a great fit;
>Where closed loop boreholes make sense, particularly for combined heating & cooling;
>Where minewater and thermal storage can unlock at-scale waste heat utilisation; and
>Where big buildings, manufacturing and heat networks create the right “anchor demand”.

Not everywhere, all at once. Not drilling to the centre of the earth for super hot rock. Not a number of things that are being trialled elsewhere in the world in better geology; at least not yet.

But enough places to build confidence, supply chain, and repeatability.
