Today’s exciting news that the UK’s first deep geothermal electricity plant is up and running in Cornwall is genuinely transformative for clean, secure, affordable energy.
The United Downs project is generating firm renewable electricity 24/7 and hosting integrated lithium extraction from hot geothermal water deep beneath Redruth.
But what should excite anyone serious about decarbonising heat is not just the headline power story it is, but what it proves: tapping the ground beneath our feet for energy is not a fringe idea it is now real and delivering.
Cornwall is special because its granite is hotter than most of the UK, but that does not mean geothermal’s role ends there.
Quite the opposite.
Shallow geothermal resources at much lower depths provide usable heat that is easier and cheaper to develop for buildings, industry, hospitals and heat networks.
The subsurface beneath towns and cities across the UK holds heat that can displace gas boilers without extreme drilling costs.
Here’s why this pioneering project matters for heat decarbonisation in the UK:
✅ We have now crossed a psychological threshold: geothermal is no longer an academic concept it is a deployed source of clean energy.
✅ That should immediately improve investor confidence for near-surface geothermal heat solutions, including ground source heat pumps and district heat networks, which require shallower wells at far lower cost.
✅ It means policymakers have a live example to point to when they talk about decarbonising heat in homes, schools, universities, hospitals, industrial sites and data centres because geothermal heat is available 24 hours a day and does not depend on weather.
✅ It underlines the sheer scale of usable heat available underground compared to other renewables this heat can be unlocked for thousands of buildings with smaller, shallower projects before or in parallel with deep power generation.
Congratulations to Geothermal Engineering Ltd and partners in Cornwall. They’ve proven the geology works, the technology works and communities support it.
Now we must lean into all forms of geothermal to deliver low carbon heat across the UK.
