UK developers: 61% of national heating demand could be met by Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES).
We currently have eleven systems.
A late-2024 Imperial College study shows the UK has both the climate and the aquifers to scale ATES, delivering MW-scale heating and cooling for large buildings and districts.
Key findings:
• Up to 61% of UK heating and 79% of cooling could technically be supplied
• Significant carbon savings vs comparable heat pump systems
• Cooling demand is rising fastt – ATES supplies both from the same wells
• UK underperformance is largely a design and awareness issue, not geology
For large, high-density schemes:
>ATES is seasonal storage beneath your site.
>Summer heat becomes winter supply.
>Winter cool becomes summer resilience.
The Netherlands has ~3,000 systems.
The UK has eleven.
