HaaS is a version of Energy as a Service, a new way for consumers to procure and use energy in their facilities. Traditionally industrial and commercial consumers bought their own heat generation equipment, like a gas boiler, had it installed, and then maintained, fueled and operated it, paying all the gas and maintenance bills through the life of the boiler.
Renewable energy solutions, including clean heat, often have higher upfront capital costs, but much lower running costs. The higher upfront capital costs can be a sticking point for cash-focused businesses or those that want to ensure that the capital on their balance sheets is only linked to their core business. In contrast, the provision of such capital with competitive cost or premium, is a very attractive proposition to green finance funds.
The HaaS process works like this. Causeway starts with assessing the customers critical needs, including identifying demand reduction opportunities. We then move to a design of the energy solution, laying out through engineering the capital and running costs of the new system. These cost for the basis for an investment decision by green finance that then forms a pricing proposal to the customer in the Heat Purchase Agreement over the life of the project, which will likely be measured in decades.
In essence the customer will pay a regular tariff or subscription which covers the cost of capital, the running costs and a markup to Causeway and the green financier. The customer will therefore not only not have to stump up the capital costs, but will more than likely enjoy an energy expense similar to or better than the previous running cost of the fossil system.
A typical arrangement where Causeway Energies can install the system at the customer’s expense and leave them to operate it day-to-day, only with periodic checks on the surface equipment.
